This buffalo intertwines the natural features of the Black Hills with images of human reverence for this beautiful and sacred part of our country. The paintings honor those with the foresight to preserve a part of wilderness for generations. Each tunnel carved through the rock is a window showcasing natural features that can only be experienced in the Black Hills.
A view of Mount Rushmore can be seen through one tunnel. It is complemented by the Hill’s natural residents, big horn sheep, mountain goats, and deer.
Another tunnel reveals a herd of buffalo running toward the opening with the vast forested Hills in the distance. High meadows combine with the forest, adding to the scene. This piece highlights the golden mineral riches that brought settlers to the hills and the natural riches that bring people here today.
