Sandra Achterling
Stanchfield, MN

This buffalo intertwines the work of the men and women who settled the Black Hills. Men often worked the mines to provide income for their families, while women used their skills to provide comforts with beautiful designs.  The gold is a symbol for the men while the quilt symbolizes the women’s work.

Using a pallet of white and yellow gold variations, a Morning Star quilt is painted on the top.  The design is enhanced with grapes and leaves to reference the story of Black Hills Gold.  Sparkle is added to the paint for shine.  The piece sits on a custom base.

Sandra is a wildlife artist who brings her love of animals and nature to her paintings.  Born and raised in Minnesota, she continues to paint from her studio in rural Chisago County.  She also frequents Custer State Park to paint buffalo and antelope.  She is influenced by past artists, Carl Rungius and Rosa Bonheur.

Sandra studied at the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul, MN as well as numerous classes & workshops conducted by accomplished artists.  Her knowledge of animal anatomy and behavior was learned first hand on the farm and through hunting experience.  Sandra’s paintings celebrate moments in life.
