This depiction goes back to Peggy’s childhood on the 10-day trip from Key West to the Black Hills. The family sang western songs the whole way. Some of their favorites included “Davy Crockett, “Take me Back to the Black Hills”, “Sixteen Tons”, and of course “Buffalo Gals”.
The evening scene shows saloon girls and patrons out in the street of a western town “dancing to the light of the moon.”
Born and raised in Key West, Florida, Peggy is a fourth generation “Conch”. However, her dad’s roots run deep in South Dakota. Growing up on an island was a unique experience, but as soon as summer came, the family could not wait to go to the Black Hills.
Peggy moved to Omaha, NE in the 70s, where she raised her family and learned to paint with oils and acrylics. She moved back to Key West where she tried her hand at clay sculpting and tile work. A trademark of her paintings is the inclusion of her dog, Spot. Peggy and her husband now live in Custer where they operate the Discovery Shop.
