This project is a combination of many design ideas submitted by the Custer High School art
students. Those working on the piece wanted to combine several types of textures with
symbols and colors that would speak to all cultures. “Max” became the theme as the students
realized many traditional themes could be blended together using the “Peter Max” method on
the buffalo form. Peter Max was a young artist who, in the 1960’s, created his art with colorful
images that reflected the emerging youth culture of the time. In design, Peter Max used
bright, flat colors with heavy black outlines. His work was in great demand in commercial art
from General Electric clocks to Burlington socks. Max was to the art world what the Beatles
were to music.
Our version of “Max” uses much of Peter Max’s style in combination with the CHS student’s
take on day and night. We wanted to use familiar aspects of the Black Hills with a fun twist!
We hope the public enjoys “Max” as much as we have creating him.
This buffalo is being raffled. Tickets are available for $20 each with a
limited number sold. One half of the raffle proceeds will be given back to
the CHS Art Club to fund future projects.
Custer High School art students enrolled in Art 1, Art 2, Advanced Art, 3D Art and Pottery can
be included in the Art Club. Custer High School art students get to showcase their work in the
Custer County Art Show each year and have been involved in the Custer Stampede for the past
three years. Students working on this year’s buffalo include - Katie Starr, Autumn Conwell,
Samantha Jansen, Amber Renken, Bridget Hanson, Jessica Tennyson, and Katie Fletcher.
