Ralph P. Brown was born in 1958 on the St. Regis Indian reservation in upstate New York and is an enrolled member of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. Currently living in Nebraska, he works out of Earth Lodge Studios. When not in the studio you will find him behind his drums pounding away to heavy metal music. He says of his music, "To do the stipple style of work that I do requires hours upon hours of sitting with concentrated focus. Music is my way of letting go. It is a full body workout and the perfect release after all the time sitting and drawing." Other hobbies include wood working, bead work, leather work and stained glass... anything that honors the creative spirit.
A self-taught artist, his work was discovered my Muriel Alperin of New York who became his agent and encouraged him to turn his art into a profession. Ralph has shown from New York to Nebraska, including the Lawrence Indian Art Show in Lawrence, KS and most recently "Wings Over the Platte" at the Stuhr Museum in Grand Island, NE where he participated in a wildlife exhibition.
Ralph's work includes his stunning signature dot drawings of Native American spiritual art, wildlife and portraits and his brilliant water colors. He has lived with several different tribes and studied with many Medicine Men. It is from these teachings and experiences which he draws inspiration. He credits and gives thanks to the Creator for endowing him with this gift but is also quick to thank the many people who have taught, supported, encouraged and inspired him.
His Indian name is Tawennihake which means "Making Path" in the Mohawk language. "This journey is mine to make of it what I will. While it is my path, I am blessed to share it with some wonderful people. My path is made better because of them. I will keep creating art as long as there are people with whom I can share it."
