Gary’s concept came to him in a dream. He envisioned a Native American hiding under a buffalo robe. This was the way the hunters would sneak up on the buffalo during their hunt.
Using a metal form for strength, Gary covered it with polyester sculpturing material to create a more lifelike human form. He has included a buffalo hide as a robe over the hunter’s body and the hunter is wearing a headdress that simulates a buffalo head also made of hide with porcupine claws for horns. The bow features a rawhide string. The landscaping is natural looking to depict a prairie environment.
Gary was born and raised on a Nebraska farm, observing his dad using creative skills to repair and make machinery parts. With no formal art training, Gary is inspired by his God given talents to be creative.
A Custer resident for 17 years, this is Gary’s second piece in the Custer Stampede Buffalo Art Auction. Some of Gary’s creations include handmade trophies for car shows, a life-sized Sand Hills Crane shaped from an old auto hood, and a metal sculpture of a cowboy playing guitar, on permanent display at Four Mile Old West Town, west of Custer on Hwy 16. A true love of Gary’s is restoring classic cars.
