Pawnee legend states Buffalo Woman was a mother figure with the wisdom of a buffalo. Long ago, all things were waiting in a deep place far underground. There were great herds of animals and humans, even birds. All waited as in a sleep. Buffalo woman awoke, rose and began to walk. She walked among the creatures and as she passed, they awoke and slowly began to move. She walked past even the furthest buffalo. When she found a dark round place, bowed her head and passed under into the light of day. As she did, a young cow followed, then another and another until all the herds followed. All creatures emerged after onto the earth surfaces.
