Art’s realistic style is evident on his buffalo.  Living in the Black Hills, his surroundings inspired this work, capturing and preserving moments in time of breathtaking natural beauty and subjects that reflect rich indigenous culture.  Each side features a warrior watching over their buffalo herd.  Scenes in the background can be found in areas of Custer State Park, Stockade Lake and the southern hills where the buffalo tend to roam.  The warriors signify a cultural and spiritual significance, hopefully causing the viewer to think and reflect.

Art Cleveland Red Horse is an enrolled member of the Din’e Nation.  As a child, Art would draw on paper bags with charcoal from the wood stove as materials were scarce.  A high school art teacher was an inspiration, sending his works to art shows.  Not able to afford college, Red Horse worked as a carpenter, eventually raising the funds to attend the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM where he received his Associates Degree.

Art then travelled across the US and Canada with White Eagle Singers, a Native American Drum group.  From that experience, he learned Native American “Grass Dancing” and taught himself to play and make American Indian flutes.  He continues to do presentations and workshops featuring singing, drumming, grass dancing, flute playing and speaking about his culture.

Best known for his oil paintings, Art prefers a realistic style of painting, focusing on the natural environment.  Oils dry slower than acrylics, allowing him to blend colors, and it dries “true to color’, the same shade as when wet. Art now lives with his family in Custer, SD, one of his favorite places to find landscapes and subjects to paint.
