The buffalo is an important part of Native American culture both past and present. When millions of bison ranged the North American continent, Native Americans hunted them in many ways. Sometimes a scout on horseback disguised in a buffalo robe located the herd without alarming them. Approaching the unsuspecting animals the mounted hunter could get close enough with bow and arrow to make his shot at a bull bison. The Black Hills landscape, Custer area, is the setting of this historical buffalo hunt. In the distant hills, the herd moves over the high meadow grassland. Historical documents and artwork inform the realist painting displayed on a custom base.
Working from her studio is rural Chisago County; the Minnesota artist continues to follow her passion of painting animals and landscapes. Bison and other wild animals are the main theme of her work. Sandra studied painting at the College of Visual Arts, St. Paul, Minnesota. Her work is influenced by past artists Carl Rungius and Rosa Bohneur. She frequents the Black Hills to study and paint the wild inhabitants of the countryside seeking out places described in historical documents of the unspoiled wilderness.
Sandra has painted for the Custer Stampede Buffalo Art Auction since its beginning. She is privileged to be chosen for this year’s event.
